Nature-Based Pathway to Sustainable Production of Amaranths Using a One Health Approach

This 12-month project is being implemented in Karaga district and Kassena Nankana East Municipal in northern Ghana. It is focused on testing nature-based non-chemical and lower-cost technologies, as opposed to the use of chemical fumigants and fertilizers, to generate healthy seedlings and enhance yields of Amaranths biofortified with micronutrients to help deal with hidden hunger (micronutrient deficiency) among rural children and women, especially pregnant and lactating mothers. This is meant to provide opportunities for rural farm families to improve the micro-nutritional value of Amaranths and other African leafy vegetables to reduce the reliance on unsustainable food supplement programs to address hidden hunger among the rural populace in most African and other developing countries. With a focus on nature-based technologies, the project further aims to enhance environmental quality and contribute to climate change mitigation with an associated reduction in human health risks.
